WGF friend and all-around awesome homegirl Gracie Chavez put us on to a mix she recently did for KTRU. Peep it and get a taste for what’s in store April 16th: A special BomBon featuring Chancha via Circuito and El G in the Houston installment of the Rio Arriba Tour.
The flyer says it all: Genre-pushing music centered around Latin-flavored beats. “Cumbia Nena” on bang – now!
Tune in to KTRU tonight (online or FM) 10-11 for interview with Chancha and BomBon crew.
The Rio Arriba Tour makes a big splash in Houston as South American DJ/producers Chancha via Circuito and El G deliver debut performances on Saturday, April 16 at The Green Room (813 St.Emmanuel, next to Warehouse Live). Houston’s very own Bombón DJs, Gracie Chavez, Navó and OG Bobby Trill, host the touring duo and will share the turntables as additional musical acts for the night.
Rio Arriba, which means “upriver,” is the sophomore album from an Argentine artist Chancha Via Circuito on the groundbreaking ZZK Records imprint. Chancha Via Circuito (“Pig on the Circuit”), a nickname he borrowed from a Buenos Aires train he traveled on frequently in between gigs, molds local South American rhythms into global artistry. His Rio Arriba soundscapes bubble up from the Andes like percussive lava, seething as it is soothing, while layers of drums play out like water and earth battling heat.
El G grew out of Buenos Aires after coming to Argentina in 1999 and reinventing himself more than once. Grant Dull transitioned from being a musicologist/online editor, to visual artist for events and finally to curator and DJ El G. He also co-founded world reknowned ZZK Records and Zizek Club with his Argentine partners. As a DJ, he is introducing the new sounds of digital cumbia, electro-reggaeton and Andean folklorico among other sound mutations through the decks. He peppers his sets with live percussion, collaborates with peers on stage and brings his unique vision of global music and culture to the arts community at large.
DJs Gracie Chavez, Navó and OG Bobby Trill are spearheading a new digital Latin sound in Houston with their popular monthly event, Bombón. Established in 2010, Bombón continues to introduce booming tropical beats all the way from South and Central America to the Dirty Dirty and back. From cumbia, moombahton, tropical bass, 3ball, baile funk, salsa, mambo to the latest in emerging Latin American sounds, Bombón DJs make you want to put on your zapatos and dance at la pachanga ’til they hurt every month.
Catch the Bombón gang over at Avant Garden (411 Westheimer) each first Friday of the month, where they regularly spin and incorporate live instrumentation. They will DJ a Cinco de Mayo happy hour at Avant, and the next night on Friday, May 6. Check Facebook.com/BombonHouston for more details and upcoming events.
And in support of this tour, you can also tune into Houston’s Son Pacifica on KPFT90.1 FM on Tuesday, April 12 to hear an interview with Chancha via Circuito and Bombón DJs from 10-11 p.m. (CST).
